VKL designer profile: Pam Powers

pampowerspicPam Powers is an Orange County, California native. She learned to knit as a child, but didn’t pick it up again until about seven years ago, when she picked up a copy of Rowan Magazine and was shocked to find such beautiful, modern knitting patterns.

She re-learned at her LYS and began designing three years ago after she taught herself to alter existing patterns for better fit. She’s taken classes on design from Lily Chin, Barry Klein, and Edie Eckman, and her first published design (after a year of submissions and nearly giving up!) was on the cover of Interweave!

Pam has a very patient husband, 14-year-old son, 12-year-old daughter, two cats, and two dogs (one of them a puppy). When she’s not with her family or designing, she likes to watch Project Runway.

ruffledruched2Pam’s most popular design is her Ruffled & Ruched Scarf. This scarf is knitted vertically from the center out to the sides from provisionally cast on stitches. The scalloped rose is placed on a pin and used as a closure for the many versatile ways you can “wrap” this scarf. One possible way is shown at left.

devonshire_22011Pam’s most recent design is Devonshire from Twist Collective Spring / Summer 2011. This V-neck cardigan has three-quarter length set-in sleeves and fronts that are slightly longer than the back. Lace panels border both front edges and are repeated on the upper back. An optional ribbed collar adds a delicate touch. Devonshire is shown at right.

We are thrilled to debut Pam’s next pattern, Kiko, knitted in Madelinetosh Tosh DK. Look for it at our booth at Vogue Knitting Live!
