VKL designer profile: SpillyJane

spillylit-500SpillyJane is a Windsor, Canada, native. She lives in a 100 year old house with her partner and their avian companion, Pookie.

Jane designs full-time. Most of her patterns are socks or mittens, often with intricate and whimsical colorwork. She says: “I primarily design mittens and socks, as I love both of them more than any other knit garments – you can get away with a lot of unconventional colour and pattern on socks and mitts than you can on a sweater. And eveyone wears socks – everyone deserves to have special, fun little garments that make them smile. Socks are perfect for that.”

swedishfishHer inspirations range from color and texture to architecture and food to music–she’s translated several songs into patterns! Jane’s first book is coming out in 2012.

Jane’s most iconic patterns are her Swedish Fish Socks and Mittens. They’ve been favorited a combined 6000 times on Ravelry and each have around 200 projects. Both mittens and socks make use of a repetitive, simplified and iconic fish-shape – perfect for both newcomers and those who have done colourwork before. The patterns are also ideal for using up bits of leftover and precious yarns – the fish can be in as many (or as few) colours as you like!sockupied_oak_acorn_socks_medium2

Her most recent design is the Oak + Acorn socks, which has been published in the Fall 2011 issue of Sockupied which is put out by Interweave Press. They are an ode to the big old oak tree that grew (and continues to grow) out behind the house where she grew up.

We are thrilled to be debuting Jane’s next pattern, Benediction, knitted in Koigu KPM. Look for it in our booth at Vogue Knitting Live!
