Stephen West, aka Westknits, is a designer originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma, now knitting (and living) in the Netherlands. He is a full-time student studying choreography at the School for New Dance Development in Amsterdam.
Stephen’s designs have been featured in Knitty, the Sanguine Gryphon, and his booklets Westknits 1 and Westknits 2 and the forthcoming Westknits 3. Known for unisex shawls that combine colors and textures in unique ways, his designs are visually interesting as well as being fun to knit with a little bit of a challenge to them.
Stephen’s most popular pattern is Daybreak, a two-color semicircular shawl in graphic stripes that echo the look of a sunrise. Daybreak is pictured at left.
Most recently, Stephen released Earth & Sky, a multi-color shawl that a few thousand people knitted as part of a mystery knitalong–without ever seeing a picture of what it would look like at the end! Earth & Sky is pictured at right.
